About Snap.VIN

Snap.VIN is a practical VIN decoder built for people making real decisions: buying a used car, checking open recalls, comparing trims, or confirming factory equipment.

Our Mission

Vehicle data is often spread across multiple tools and hard-to-read government pages. We built Snap.VIN to make this information clear, fast, and mobile-friendly so anyone can run a VIN check in seconds. Our goal is simple: give buyers and owners trustworthy information before they spend money or take risk.

Where Our VIN Data Comes From

Core vehicle specification data is sourced from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Product Information Catalog (vPIC). Safety recall data is sourced from NHTSA recall endpoints. Fuel economy and annual fuel cost fields are sourced from fueleconomy.gov for supported vehicles.

  • NHTSA vPIC: manufacturer, make, model, trim, engine, drivetrain, body class, and production metadata
  • NHTSA recalls: open and historical campaign information
  • EPA fuel economy: MPG and estimated annual fuel cost (Premium features for supported matches)
  • NHTSA safety ratings: crash-test ratings where available

How We Think About Accuracy

We prioritize official data sources and avoid scraping unknown third-party VIN tables. Even with authoritative sources, some records can be incomplete for low-volume models, imported vehicles, or older units. When data is missing, we show that clearly rather than guessing.

Snap.VIN is an informational research tool. It should be combined with an independent pre-purchase inspection, title records, and a full vehicle history report for major buying decisions.

Who Uses Snap.VIN

  • Used-car buyers comparing VIN details against seller claims
  • Drivers checking open recall campaigns before service appointments
  • Dealers validating trim and equipment before listing inventory
  • Insurance, finance, and fleet users who need quick VIN references
  • Mobile users scanning door-jamb barcodes on-site

Editorial and Product Standards

  • We prefer source-backed claims and direct links to official public resources.
  • We update explanatory content when public standards or APIs change.
  • We avoid deceptive growth tactics and do not paywall basic safety lookup data.
  • We build mobile-first because many VIN checks happen in parking lots and dealerships.
